December on the Farm
December can be a very pretty time on the farm. The morning sun twinkles off the frost that covers the ground, and the iced mud crisps under your wellies as you walk around the fields taking in the fresh winter air.
'The fields are packed full of what
you eat for your Christmas dinner'
At his time of year the fields are bursting with lots of vegetables you may see on your Christmas dinner plate, such as sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower and we're grading 5 different types of potatoes. In fact the traditional Christmas lunch is a time when the majority of the country will be dining on possibly the most seasonal produce of the year.
To get ready for the year ahead we are planting broad beans, strawberries and oats. The cattle are fattening up in their sheds out of the icy temperatures. The sheep are also out in their woolly winter coats maintaining the grass pastures by nibbling away and keeping winter growth under control.
