This American classic will turn your BBQ hot dog into something speical. Add this fiery topping to impress your family and friends at your next summer party!

Ingredients

  • 6 Sausages
  • 6 Hot dog buns
  • 1 Large onion, chopped
  • 2 Garlic cloves, chopped
  • 750g Minced beef
  • 1 can Chopped tomatoes, 400g
  • 1 can Red kidney beans, 400g
  • 450ml Beef stock
  • 2 tbsp Honey (molasses can also be used)
  • 2 tbsp Sweet paprika 
  • 1 tbsp Ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Cayenne powder (optional)
  • Salt, a good pinch
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil

Optional Garnishes

  • Cheese (cheddar or monterey jack), grated
  • Red onion, chopped
  • Yellow mustard
  • Jalapeno peppers

Method

  1. For the chilli: heat the  oil in a large non-stick frying pan and saute the onions and garlic for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the mince and cook for 8-10 minutes until brown, breaking up any meaty chunks with a wooden spoon.
  3. Stir in the honey, paprika, cumin, chilli powder and cayenne (if using) and fry for a minute before adding the chopped tomatoes and beef stock. Season to taste.
  4. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for an hour, stirring occasionally.
  5. Stir in the red kidney beans and continue to cook for a further 10 minutes.
  6. While the chilli is simmering, grill or pan-fry the sausages until cooked.
  7. Place a sausage in a sub or hot dog bun and top with a good serving of the chilli followed by garnishes of your choice.
