As we enter the new year, we imagine many of you might be battling a little post-Christmas guilt. But if you’ve been savouring our chocolatiers’ bean-to-bar creations, we have good news — you shouldn’t be! If you stick to the good stuff, chocolate is actually a superfood.
Up until 400 years ago, cacao was consumed purely as a healthy elixir. It was treasured by the Mayans and Aztecs, who valued cacao beans more than gold. In fact, the plant’s name, Theobroma cacao, literally translates to “Food of the Gods”. While modern mass production has stripped chocolate of its nutrients and packed it with sugar and palm oil, “real” cacao remains a nutritional powerhouse.
Modern science has finally caught up with ancient wisdom. We now know that cacao is packed with antioxidants and flavonoids that support heart health, lower blood pressure, and fight inflammation. It helps balance cholesterol and can even boost your metabolism.
It’s also seriously good mood food. Cacao contains two incredible natural compounds: anandamide (the “bliss molecule”) and PEA (the “love molecule”). These stimulate feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, lifting your spirits naturally. The catch? You won’t get these benefits from a mass-produced bar. To treat chocolate as a health product, it needs to be minimally processed with a high cacao content (70%+).
