Last week we were joined by Barny Butterfield of Sandford Orchards for our Cider Masterclass. We got to listen to his amazing cider story as he shared his knowledge, tips and perfect pairings!
The evening started with the Exeter Chiefs' Rib Tickler, a cider that is harvested and bottled by players from Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club in collaboration with Sandford Orchards. The project derived from wanting to raise vital funds for charities with profit going to the Exeter Chiefs Foundation and Wooden Spoon.
About the Rib Tickler itself... its flavour includes rich aromas of honey and baked apple, ripe and buttery on the palate, with a moreish apple skin flavour, balanced with a crisp, natural acidity.
Barny paired this fresh cider with Delivita Sourdough flatbreads to start, followed by a spectacular platter of Good Game Charcuterie complimented by an Apple Negroni - made using Sandford Orchards Ice Cider, Salcombe Gin and Vermouth. This punchy, tart cocktail not only tastes amazing, it was the perfect palate cleanser.
Barny then praised Ridge and Furrow's lightly sparkling, naturally sweet craft cider which uses artisan method of arrested fermentation. This was served with flavoursome, seasoned chicken skewers prepared on our Big Green Egg.
The evening continued with great knowledge from Barny as we also tasted the St Louis Dry Hopped Cider, Ice Cider and a Cider Collins Cocktail created using Sandford Orchards Berry Lane cider and Black Cow Vodka. It was mixed together with ice, a squeeze of lemon and a teaspoon of caster sugar and served with fresh raspberries!
We had a brilliant evening celebrating all things cider... we hope to see you at the next one!
