breakthrough_cider_darts_farm_devon_1000x600 Recently, we hosted The Sandford Orchards Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards in The Farm Table.The awards saw a total of twenty entries from thirteen counties, with all styles of cider being represented; from naturally sweet to single variety, session ciders to bottle fermented. It was great to see such high quality entries from so many different regions!

breakthrough_cider_winner_darts_farm_devon_1000x600 On the day, judges Barny Butterfield & Andy May of Sandford Orchards, George Dart, Suzy Atkins, Gabe Cook of The Ciderologist, Tom Oliver of Oliver's Cider and Rich Clancy from The Stable decided that Tom Moon's sparkling medium cider was taking home the gold to Glastonbury. At only 25 year's old, Tom is producing around 10,000 litres of cider on his own, whilst juggling his main job as a builder. His sparkling medium is an incredibly well made session cider, complex but easy drinking… a worthy winner!

The first to Simon Rawlins of Rawlins Cider whose keeved Somerset cider, crafted us well ripened hand-picked apples, was exceptional. The other silver medal went to Artistraw Cider from Herefordshire and their Voulez-Shrew cider; this sustainable and natural cider maker's ethos and exceptional quality makes them a really exciting prospect for the cider industry.

What are the Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards?

The Breakthrough Cider Maker Awards were launched by Sandford Orchards in 2019 and aim to recognise and celebrate excellent quality whole juice ciders from around the UK.
