We are thrilled to announce that our expert florist, Anna Slade, was awarded a Silver medal at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
After being shortlisted as one of the top 16 florists in the country, Anna was invited to Chelsea to enter a piece into the British Florist Associations Florist of the Year Awards. This year the floristry theme was “Queen Victoria’s Birthday Celebration” where florists were asked to create a royal floral crown.
After researching historical crowns for 3 months, with inspiring trips to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Honiton Lace Museum, Anna became taken with an emperor’s crown from the Ming dynasty. Following this theme, Anna spent hours each night researching and testing different Chinese plant material, considering its seasonality and longevity to be incorporated into a floral piece. Anna’s final design uses Chinese physalis, threaded bamboo shoots and leaves hand stitched with raw silk to create a beautiful, intricate crown fit for a queen.
We were so proud to see Anna’s work featured on BBC Two’s coverage of the flower show where presenters described Anna’s piece as, ‘exquisite’, ‘so brave, it’s couture’ with ‘gorgeous plant material, really original’.
Anna came away with an amazing Silver medal for her piece which will now take pride of place on display in The Flower Shack. Make sure you come and see it!
